Born in Melbourne, Australia, James comes to photography from a background in classical ballet. After undertaking further studies in art history in Australia, he then moved to New York city where he was awarded a scholarship to study photography at Parsons School of Design.
Upon completing his studies, James began his career working extensively as a freelance photographic assistant for a large group of renowned photographers in New York, including Craig McDean, Cedric Buchet, Willy Vanderperre, Paolo Roversi and Karim Sadli, amongst others. After moving to Europe in 2015, he went solo, mostly focusing on men’s fashion and reportage.
Primarily a location photographer, James' style combines a highly specific sense of place with formal classicism to create iconic pictures. He has shot editorials for 10 Men, Masses, The Telegraph Luxury, Hercules, Vogue Italia, Interview and 032c.
His commercial clients include Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior and Uniqlo.
